Increased number of cases

The Defender received a total of 1986 cases in the second quarter of 2012, which is up 289 cases compared to the same period last year. He noted an increase in the number of cases in relation to public administration – 1251 cases, 178 more than in the second quarter last year. The number of cases outside his sphere of authority, as defined by the Public Defender of Rights Act, remained at basically the same level (IIQ 2012 [735; 37.0%]; IIQ 2011 [624; 36.7%]).

In addition to this the Defender also received 78 cases related to protection against discrimination. The staff of his office made 11 systematic visits to supervise the restriction of personal freedom. In connection with his powers concerning the monitoring of the detention of foreigners and administrative expulsion procedures the Defender received 709 monitoring rulings, while his co-workers carried out 1 escort, during which they monitored administrative expulsion procedures.

In the public administration agenda the Defender again received most cases relating to social security – 318 and newly cases in relation to administration in the area of employment and labour – 135 (compared to 52 cases in the same period last year). The number of cases relating to building proceedings and town planning was the third highest – 120.
